Filter Builder 2.0 Glossary

Glossary of terms and definitions for filter criteria and operators.

Updated over a year ago

This filter builder offers many of the same criteria for targeting contacts available in Legacy Filter Settings, as well as access to some new criteria and an easier-to-use interface.

Common Terminology

  • Criteria: A variety of data collected about contacts. Click here to learn about the different types of criteria available when creating New Filters.

  • Rule: A single piece of criteria configured by applying values such as the merchant, a list(s), date parameters, numeric values, text values, and other attributes. šŸ’”Configurations will vary depending on the type of criteria selected and data available in your account.

  • Group: One or more sets of criteria; using a group of filtering criteria enables you to define complex conditions.

  • Operators: A logical conjunction to connect two or more Rules within a single Group or, used to connect two or more Groups within a Filter together. Click here to learn more about using operators.

Criteria Types

Marketing Status

  • First Email Subscribe Date: The date a contact first subscribed to an email list.

  • Most Recent Email Subscribe Date: The date a contact last resubscribed to an email list.

  • Segments: Include/exclude contacts within a saved segment. The selected segment name will always display making it easy to identify which segments were used when reviewing message reports. Learn how to create a saved segment for reuse.

āš ļø This criteria type is ONLY available when building filters in the Message Authoring page and not when creating a saved segment in the Segment Manager page because they cannot be nested.

Contact Attributes

  • Email Address: The email address of a contact.

  • Profile Fields: Custom metadata fields for collecting additional data for a contact. The types of operators you can use in your filters are determined by the type of data, which are:

    • Text (up to 250 characters)

    • Numeric (integers)

    • Radio Buttons

    • Check boxes

    • Date

šŸ’” Existing profile fields on a specific list can be viewed under Contacts > Email Contacts Profile Fields.

  • Country: Automatically identifies the country the contact visited last based on the IP address used when engaging with emails. Choose to include or exclude contacts from multiple countries by using the multi-select (functions as an OR operator) dropdown feature.

  • State/Region (U.S. and Canada ONLY): Automatically identifies the state, region, or territory the contact visited last based on the IP address used when engaging with emails. Choose to include or exclude contacts from multiple states/regions by using the multi-select (functions as an OR operator) dropdown feature.

  • Zip/Postal Code (U.S. ONLY): Automatically identifies the zip code of the area the contact visited last based on the IP address used when engaging with emails. Some examples include:

    • Include or exclude contacts in one or many zip codes

    • Target a radius up to 200 miles from a zip code

    • Target a specific zip code list by using the 'Starts With' operator and the 3 digit prefix value.

Message Activity

  • Last Email Send Date: The date a contact was last sent an email.

  • Last Email Open Date: The date a contact last opened an email. How are opens captured?

  • Last Email Read Date: The date a contact last read an email. How is read captured?

  • Last Email Click Date: The date a contact last clicked an email.

Purchase History

  • Purchase Status: A contact either has or has not purchased from a merchant.

  • Order Date: The date a customer first or last purchased from a merchant. Note: Using a negative operator such as "is not between" will also return contacts that have not purchased. These contacts can be excluded by selecting "has purchased" from the Purchase Status criteria.

  • Order Total: The total price of an order, evaluated using one of the following operations:

    • Sum of all orders

    • Average of all orders

    • Largest of all orders

    • Smallest of all orders

šŸ’” Negative order totals may be included in filters using a "less than" operator for cases where orders were returned or refunded.

  • Order Source: The source an order was received from a customer, for example, email, fax, phone, or simply in-store or online. Note: You can review sources for a merchant under Solutions > Solutions Data Summary > Buyer Activity > Point of Purchase.

  • Order Count: The number of times a customer purchased from a merchant over all-time.

  • Order Item SKU: The stock keeping unit of an item in an order.

  • Order Item Master SKU: The master SKU of an item in an order.

  • Order Item Title: The name of a product in an order.

  • Order Item Price: The unit price of an item in an order.

  • Order Item Quantity: The quantity of a line item in an order.

  • Order Item Gender: The designated gender of a product in an order.

  • Order Item Brand: The brand of a product in an order.

  • Order Item Category: The category of a product in an order.

  • Order Item Subcategory: The subcategory of a product in an order.

  • Order Item Size: The size of an item in an order.

  • Order Item Style: The style of an item in an order.

  • Order Item Color: The color of an item in an order.

  • Order Item Meta 1-5: Additional meta data for an item in an order.

šŸ’” The values entered for text criteria such as Title, Brand, Category, etc. need to match those found in your product catalog, which can be reviewed in the Product Summary under Solutions > Solutions Data Summary > Product Information > Product Summary. You may need to export to view additional data not displayed online. Not case sensitive.

Operators

There are two levels of operators; Primary(Logical) operators, which connect two or more sets of criteria or filter groups and Secondary/(Relational) operators, which calculate the relationship between a selection of data and a value.

Primary Operators

  • AND:

    • All rules must be met by the contact

    • This operator is more restrictive

    • The segment count will become smaller than if the OR operator was used

  • OR :

    • Only one of the rules must be met by the contact

    • This operator is more inclusive

    • The segment count will be larger than if the AND operator was used

Secondary Operators

  • Text: Is, Is Not, Starts With, Contains, Does Not Contain, Is In The Comma Delimited List, Is Not In The Comma Delimited List.

  • Numeric: Is Greater Than, Is Greater Than or Equal To, Is Less Than, Is Less Than or Equal To, Is Equal To, Is Not Equal To, Is In The Comma Delimited List, Is Not In The Comma Delimited List, Is Between, Is Not Between. Is Within, Is Not Within - used with automated geolocation.

  • Radio Button: Is On, Is Off.

  • Check Box: Is Checked, Is Not Checked.

  • Date:

    • Relative: Is Today, Is More Than, Is Exactly, Is Less Than, Is Between, Is Not Between.

    • Absolute: Is After, Is On, Is Before, Is Between, Is Not Between.

    • State: Is Unknown, Has Any Value.

Things to consider when using inverse operators:

  • The operator selected within a single group will be universal for that group.

  • A different operator can be used in a new group within the same segment.

  • The operator selected between groups will be universal for that particular segment.

šŸ’” Helpful Tips

  • Adding a large number of criteria, especially options such as 'in the comma delimited list,' can cause a delay or failure in filter processing. Consider the specific goal of the filter when using the criteria below.

  • Some criteria require selecting a data source such as Email Activity and Purchase History that require Email List selection and Merchant selection respectively.

    • Email List: Choose to use information from the current list, or information that is an aggregate of all lists.

    • Merchant: Select the appropriate Merchant. This automatically populates if you have the Merchant selected as Default in Manage > List > List Settings

  • How the segment counts are calculated:

    • The order of the groups does not alter the segment count.

    • The rules within each group will be evaluated, and then the groups together.
