SMS Profile Fields and Personalization Guide

SMS Profile Fields are account-level fields that store information about your SMS contacts. There are two types of fields System Fields and Custom Fields. System Fields are pre-defined by Listrak and Custom Fields can be defined based on your goals.

SMS profile fields can be used to customize the content of your messages, such as adding first name to the beginning of a message, or used as part of your filtering strategies, such as only sending broadcast messages to those interested in a specific category of products.


Navigate to Profile Fields by clicking in the menu Contacts > SMS Contacts Profile Fields to view or create new fields.

System Profile Fields

A system profile field is just a pre-set profile field type to get you started. Your account is set up with 5 of them, and they cannot be edited:

  • Birthday

  • Email Address

  • First Name

  • Last Name

  • Postal Code

Custom Profile Fields

You can create up to 50 custom profile fields to collect preferences and use for segmentation. These fields can then be accessed and used from any sender code in your account.

To create a new field:

  1. Click New Profile Field.

  2. Enter a Field Name.

  3. Select a Field Type from the drop-down menu.

    1. The following data types are available:

      1. Text: Used to store alphanumeric values, limit of 255 characters.

      2. Number: Used to store numeric values ONLY, limit of 255 characters.

      3. Checkbox: Used to collect mutually inclusive data from a form (multiple options can be selected).

      4. Date (mm/dd/yyyy): Used to collect numeric calendar dates.

  4. Click Save.


Using Profile Fields to add Personalization to Messages

To add personalized content into a message you will place a Listrak-specific tag in the body of your message.

  1. Within the message content body of a message.

  2. Click on the add personalization button.

  3. Select the data to use for personalization from the drop-down.

    1. Optional: Set a default value by adding Default='default value' after the profile field.

      [[Contact:FirstName Default='default value']]

  4. Complete the message setting by following the wizard.

For Example: For First Name the default value of Fashionista would look like this:

๐Ÿ’ก If you do not want to set a default value another way to send a message with personalization is to set up a filter to segment the message to only contacts who have submitted their First Name. Using the First Name example, the filter would be Profile Field > First Name > Is Not Empty. Learn more about SMS Filtering.
