Creating Dynamic Subject Lines and Message Details for Flash Sale Emails

Learn how to send groups of contacts personalized messages with different subject lines or details such as from name.

When creating a flash email, any property in the message details of step 1 in the setup flow can be personalized with data from a profile field except from email address. You can personalize a from name, subject line, or preheader with values such as seller name as a from name or include a contact's current loyalty tier in a subject line.

You can take your personalization to the next level using dynamic subject line to display separate subject lines to contacts based on the criteria they meet.

Read the article below to explore the setup process.

Personalizing Message Details

Using liquid code, you can display the value stored in a contact's profile field as part of the message details.

Display Profile Field Values

The easiest way to personalize the message details is by including a profile field formatted as a liquid object that can includes a fallback default value if a users who receives the email does not have a value in this field.

In this example in the from name below, it contains the personalization object for the Agent Name field in the account. If a contact does not have an assigned agent, contacts will see the brand name instead.

The subject line contains the personalization object that displays a contact's skin concern, but no default is included. If a contact did not have a skin concern listed, nothing would appear after the word your.

⚠️ Include a default unless you can be sure that the field contains a value. For example, if you pair the subject line above with a message filter that excludes contacts where skin concern has no value, contacts will have a value.

Create Dynamic Subject Lines

The second option for personalizing message details is to use an if/els statement with liquid. This allows you to send completely different subject lines to user based on the value in a profile field. You can also include a personalized object within the if/els statement.

{% if contact.skin_concerns == "acne" %}
Clear your skin without clearing out your wallet {{ contact.first_name | default: "babe" }}. Our top acne picks.
{% elsif contact.skin_concerns contains "wrinkles" %}
Wrinkles are no match for our new anti-aging line.
{% else %}
Best sellers straight to your inbox.
{% endif %}

In the code example above, the skin concern field is used to determine which subject line a contact will receive. A user with an acne concern will receive the first subject line, which is personalized with their first name. If they do not have first name, it will show the default of babe. Contacts with a skin concern that contains wrinkles will receive the second subject line. Any contacts who do not match the previous two filters will receive the final subject line.

⚠️ The final subject line beginning with the {% else %} is required or the message will send without a subject line which increases the likelihood of the message not being delivered or having the user mark it as spam.
