Your contacts provide you with information about themselves in many different forms. Whether it's when creating an account, completing a purchase, or filling out their interests in a preference center, this information is available in a contact's profile and can be used to support your segmentation strategy. 

This additional customer information can be stored in the segmentation fields of a customer's profile. 

Access the existing fields in a contact's profile by: 

1. Navigate from the home menu to Contacts.
2. Go to Segmentation.
3. Then Modify Existing Field Group.

Field groups allow you to categorize this additional information. Click the name of a field group to display the individual fields in the group. 

Selecting a type of field when building segments determines the way information is stored. Learn more about how the information is stored in our Data Types article. 

The information can be stored as:

  • Text
  • Numeric values
  • Radio Buttons
  • Check boxes 
  • Dates

The types of operators you can use in your filters are determined by the type of data. For example, radio buttons are either on (selected) or off (not selected) and numeric values are either above, below, or equal to the value in the field. Keep in mind the types of fields available as we begin to build out the filters.

BUILDING FILTERS WITH SEGMENTATION FIELD DATA 

In our message, there's an event featured in New York that focuses on our new shoe line. For our marketing message, we only want to send to those who may be able to attend the event and have expressed interest in our shoes. View the additional information that's being collected about our customers below. 

The goal is to send a message to those contacts who are in the sates of Pennsylvania, New York, or New Jersey and have an interest in shoes.

1. Navigate from the home menu to Authoring.
2. Go to New Message.
3. Then navigate to the Segmentation Filter Settings section.
4. Click Edit Filter.

The filtering system excludes people based on if they meet or do not meet a set of criteria. The goal is to exclude everyone who does not fit into our single group of contacts, therefore, you do not need to use filter groups. Learn more about using filter groups here.

5. Select Segmentation Field Groups from the next drop-down menu.
6. Select the specific group. For this example, select Customer Information.
7. Select the specific field you would like to use in the filter. For example, State.
8. Then, select how the system will match the information in our text field in our operator drop-down. There are a list of values our text could equal (the different states) so select Is In the Comma Delimited List. The value in the field must match one of the values listed.
9. Input the value the text must match. In this example, list each sate with a comma in between to form our comma delimited list. 

The next step is to select how the filter is combined. Both criteria must be true in order for a contact to receive our message.

10. Select AND from the drop-down highlighted above.
11. Click Update.

Now we're ready to add the second criteria that will be used to build our filter: an interest in shoes. 

13. Click New Filter.
14. Select Segmentation Field Groups from the segment type drop-down.
15. Then, select Customer Information.
16. Select the Interest Shoes field.
17. Select Is Checked for the operator.
18. Click Update.
19. Click Apply Filter.
